Thoughts on the EVIL DEAD remake trailer…

Everyone else is sharing and commenting on this, so here’s my take.

I’m about to say something very bold here.

I am not a fan of the EVIL DEAD trilogy.

That’s not to say there aren’t elements of the series that aren’t appealing. The first film is probably the most tolerable of the bunch for me. But overall, the idea of combining Three Stooges-esque slapstick comedy with horror ripe with Lovecraftian overtones was something that I never understood nor got into.

I’ve always felt that the concept of THE EVIL DEAD was something of a missed opportunity for if treated with the utmost seriousness and the bleakest, darkest direction, this could be the Lovecraftian horror film we’ve all been waiting for.

Now that’s not to say that this upcoming remake will be just that, but the trailer looks very promising and certainly seems to approach this material in a manner more befitting than the original series.

Let the trolling and hate mail commence! ;)

    • That’s certainly possible, yet at the same time, I’m reminded of the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake and how everyone at the time cried out, “Blasphemy!” over the mere thought of anyone remaking Romero’s masterpiece. But then when it came out, people eventually relented and admitted that it was a pretty solid film. Of course, the producers could have gone the opposite route and just given this film a new name altogether to avoid the flak they’re likely to receive from fanboys, but then people would have accused them of ripping off THE EVIL DEAD. You just can’t win.

      • romero has a writers credit for the remake so i don’t see how it is blasphemous, even if he didn’t like the fast zombies. as for ‘the evil dead’, it already has credit with bruce behind it as a producer, needs to hold up and be scary though. i am sure it will be entertaining either way.

      • Romero didn’t write the remake. He’s credited insofar as the 2004 screenplay was inspired by the 1978 one. James Gunn actually wrote the script. Having Bruce Campbell behind the remake certainly helps but then again Tobe Hooper gave TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D his seal of approval. Haven’t seen that one yet so I don’t know if that means anything or not. At any rate, the trailer for the remake definitely looks very promising so here’s hoping for the best.

      • i didn’t say he wrote it i said he had a writer cred. and was involved. time he sucks it up. don’t get me wrong the guy is one of my heroes -> romero.
not a fan of hooper’s and how he plays the game so to me that means nothing. i do understand what you are saying though. …only time will tell.

  1. The trailer has blown me away since the first time I saw it. It goes back to the ferocity of the original and it looks to be true, graphic HORROR; surprising for a big studio film, and considering the original makers are involved, it’s even more surprising seeing as how much slapstick-y the last one was.

Graphically masochistic possessed people? Hell yeah!
